Great book on the design of type
Lettering & Type: Creating Letters and Designing Typefaces (Design Brief) by Bruce Willen and Nolan Strals
Simple, direct, clean and neat. Very well written and easy to read. If you want to begin designing letters and type this is the place to begin.
Great book on the use of type
A great book on the use of type. Thinking with Type by Ellen Lupton. It has been out for a few years and I don’t know how I missed this one. Simple and articulate. Great book for anyone interested in using type with clarity and precision.
Visual Culture
We live in a culture that is increasingly visual in nature. If you are looking for an introduction into just what is meant by visual culture you should read Practice of Looking - An Introduction to Visual Culture by Marita Sturken and Lisa Cartwright. A simple and easy read, but with good depth, that explains current theories surrounding images, the meaning of images and the power of images.
History of Graphic Design
A new book on the history of graphic design.
Graphic Design - A New History by Stephen J. Eskilson

The Printmaking Bible - The Complete Guide to Materials and Techniques by Ann D’Arcy Hughes and Hebe Vernon-Morris.
