Smith Mine Series
On the Fall 2005 Principia College abroad the group stopped at the Smith Mine. It is located just outside of Red Lodge Montana. I never knew of its existence or history prior to this encounter. We stopped and drew from the roadside in the morning. The mine is surrounded by a barbed wire fence. In the fence was a large lightly tanned horse. It was curious about us and spent the time up against the fence waiting for attention. We stopped at the mine later in the day when returning to Red Lodge. Looking out of one of the upper buildings was the horse. A truely strange sight at such a tragic place.
On February 23, 1943 77 men were working in the mine when a blast occurred at 9:37 am. Only three men survived. Making this the worst mining disaster in the history of the United States. The small town of Bear Creek never recovered from this disaster. For more information and complete details see Bearcreekmt.com.
The images presented are what I call scaintings. Screen printing over old paintings that I have “mined” from my stacks of old art. This process has given new life to old art. All works shown are in various stages of completion with many more pieces in the series in process.
Visual Culture
We live in a culture that is increasingly visual in nature. If you are looking for an introduction into just what is meant by visual culture you should read Practice of Looking - An Introduction to Visual Culture by Marita Sturken and Lisa Cartwright. A simple and easy read, but with good depth, that explains current theories surrounding images, the meaning of images and the power of images.
